Playing career
Evans played youth hockey with the Mississauga Rebels of the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL), winning the OHL Cup in his midget year. He then spent two seasons with the St. Michael's Buzzers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) starting in 2012, helping the team reach a championship berth at the Dudley-Hewitt Cup and being named a finalist for Rookie of the Year across the Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL). He committed to the University of Notre Dame Fighting Irish of the NCAA for the 2014–15 season and was named team captain before his senior year in September 2017. After his senior season, Evans signed an entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens in April 2018 and was assigned to the Laval Rocket of the American Hockey League (AHL). He received his first NHL recall during the 2019–20 season and scored his first NHL goal on February 10, 2020, in a 3–2 loss to the Arizona Coyotes. On June 2, 2021, he scored his first NHL playoff goal in Game 1 of the second round of the 2021 Stanley Cup playoffs; after the goal, he was hit hard by Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele and was stretchered off the ice. Scheifele received a four-game suspension. Evans missed the remainder of that series and the entire semifinal against the Vegas Golden Knights due to a concussion, but returned as a replacement for Joel Armia during the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He signed a three-year, $5.1 million contract extension with Montreal in October 2021. In the early part of the 2024–25 season, Evans recorded his 100th career NHL point on November 16, 2024, against the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the first seventh-round draft pick in franchise history to reach that milestone. He played his 300th NHL game on December 20, 2024, against the Detroit Red Wings. In March 2025, he agreed to a four-year contract extension with the Canadiens.

He has an older brother, Matthew, who is in finance, and two cousins who played NCAA hockey at Cornell. As a kid, Evans studied piano and completed his Grade 7 Royal Conservatory exam. He proposed to his high school girlfriend, Emily Flatley, in June 2023, and they were married the following year at Luttrellstown Castle Resort in Dublin, Ireland. In August 2025, the couple had twin boys. Evans is the son-in-law of former NHL forward Patrick Flatley, who spent 14 seasons in the league, mostly with the New York Islanders.
