Hannah Höch was a German Dada artist born in Gotha, Germany in 1889 and died in Berlin in 1978.[1][2] During the Weimar period, Höch helped originate photomontage, a fact for which she remains most famous.[1] A Google Doodle marked what would have been her 128th birthday on 1 November 2017.[3]
Life and work
Art historian Maria Makela has characterized Höch's affair with Raoul Hausmann as "stormy".[4] Anna Therese Johanne Höch, later known as Hannah Höch, first came into the world in Gotha, Germany.[5] In 1904, Höch's parents removed her from school so she could look after her youngest sibling, Marianne.[6] Under the tutelage of glass designer Harold Bergen, Höch commenced her studies at Berlin's college of Applied Arts in 1912.[6]
Throughout the Third Reich's existence, Höch remained in Berlin and maintained a very low profile.[7]
What the cited sources add
The In the In-Between account notes that Höch's work added "a wryly feminist note" to the Dadaist philosophy.[8] The Guardian article reports that the Nazis branded her a degenerate and the dadaists tried to edge her out.[9] The National Museum of Women in the Arts account notes that Höch's painting In Front of a Red Evening Sun illustrates her ongoing experimentation with abstraction.[2] The In the In-Between account states that Höch was among the first prominent artists to work with photo-montage techniques.[8]
Androgynous figures appeared in Höch's works, a feature that drew the hatred of the Nazis, according to the National Gallery of Art account.[10][11] The Art Story account says that in her trailblazing photomontages, Höch directly tackled the subjects of gender and women's place in contemporary society.[12] Combining male and female anatomies was a method Höch employed very frequently, as the In the In-Between account notes.[8]
