Joan Mitchell was an abstract painter whose career spanned from her first solo exhibition in New York in 1952 until her death in France in 1992.[1][2] She was born in Chicago on February 12, 1925, and raised in a household that valued the arts.[2] After her return to the U.S. in late 1949, Mitchell settled in New York and within a year was an active member of the “New York School” of painters and poets.[2]

Life and work
Mitchell studied at Smith College for two years before earning her BFA in 1947 and MFA in 1950 from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.[3] After her mother’s death in 1967, Mitchell used an inheritance to buy a two-acre property in Vétheuil, France, located near Giverny.[4] Her will established a foundation with the purpose of supporting artists and managing her artistic legacy.[5]
