Arnold was founded in 1906 by Karl Arnold in Nürnberg, initially producing tin toys, model ships, and doll house items. In 1935, Max Ernst became managing director and remained a driving force for over forty years. After World War II destroyed the Nürnberg facilities, production resumed in the Upper Palatinate, making window hardware before rebuilding. Under Ernst and Karl's son Ernst Arnold, the company recovered and grew.

In the late 1940s and 1950s, TT scale became popular as a small scale, but Arnold pushed further. From 1960 to 1962, it introduced the Arnold Rapido 200 line, a crude but sensational smaller size. Between 1963 and 1967, the line moved toward scale representations, and the Rapido coupler entered production, later adopted widely in N scale. The term 'N scale' came into use in 1964. By 1968–1970, the line matured, featuring a turntable and roundhouse. Arnold partnered with Revell around 1968 to market Revell Rapido trains, producing more accurate North American prototypes until the late 1960s or early 1970s.

Max Ernst retired in 1976, with the company employing 200–250 people across three Nürnberg facilities. Family control continued until 1995, when bankruptcy led to sale to Rivarossi of Italy. Rivarossi also went bankrupt, and all assets were sold to Hornby of the United Kingdom, with production now in China.
