Lore & Background

Kader began in 1948 by manufacturing plastic flashlights, then a novelty. In 1984 it acquired its customer Bachmann Bros., which had suffered financial difficulties, and renamed it Bachmann Industries. Kader used the Bachmann brand to enter the North American market and later purchased other failing model railway companies, closing local production and re-engineering models in Hong Kong before manufacturing in mainland China. European expansion came in 1989 with Bachmann Branchline (using Palitoy Mainline moulds), followed by Liliput in 1992 and Graham Farish in 2000. In 2007 it acquired Williams models and launched 'Williams by Bachmann'. In November 2008 Kader took over Sanda Kan, its nearest competitor in precision model railway contract manufacturing, which had been experiencing production and debt problems after a takeover by J.P. Morgan private equity. Kader announced Sanda Kan would continue as a distinct entity, with original owner W.S. Ting returning to lead it. The company also owns real estate in the US, including the Everline Resort and Spa at Palisades Tahoe in Olympic Valley, California.

Reader's Guide

Kader Group's significance lies in its transformation from a flashlight maker into a dominant force in the global model railway industry. Through a strategy of acquiring established but struggling brands—Bachmann, Liliput, Graham Farish, and Sanda Kan—Kader consolidated production under its Hong Kong and mainland China facilities, improving quality and reducing costs. This approach allowed it to become the largest volume seller of model railways, offering scales including H0, N, On30, and G, with brands tailored to North America, the United Kingdom, Europe, and China. The 2008 acquisition of Sanda Kan, which had manufactured for Hornby, Lionel, Atlas, and many others, concentrated a significant portion of the world's model train production under one owner. The long-term effects of this concentration remain unclear. Kader's legacy also includes one of the worst industrial disasters in history: the 1993 fire at its Thailand joint-venture factory, which killed 188 people and injured over 500, mostly young female workers.
