Kira's origins are steeped in tragedy. Born in a space colony to a family of scientists, he lost both parents under violent circumstances and was taken in by a kind family who raised him to value life above all else. He grew up in the colony's civilian society, completely removed from the political tensions between Earth and PLANT, and developed a deep-seated aversion to violence. His one distinguishing trait was an inexplicable, almost supernatural ease with mechanical systems and combat simulations—a gift he never understood until the G-Fund designation confirmed it.

When the Archangel is ambushed and Kira is forced to take the controls of the Strike Gundam, his pacifism becomes both his greatest strength and his most agonizing weakness. He can fight with inhuman precision yet refuses to pull the trigger on a living opponent, a stance that infuriates his comrades and confuses his enemies. Over the course of SEED, he is repeatedly pushed past his limits by the people he loves—Lacus Clyne, the Crown Princess of PLANT whose political marriage he cannot accept; Athrun Zala, his former friend who becomes a PLANT ace; and Captain Murrue Ramius, who gives him a purpose beyond self-preservation.

By SEED Destiny, Kira has shed his initial paralysis but carries the scars of every battle.
