Thibodeau was born on January 17, 1958 in New Britain, Connecticut. He played basketball at Salem State College, serving as captain during the 1980–81 season. He began his coaching career as an assistant at Salem State in 1981, became head coach there in 1984, then moved to Harvard as an assistant from 1985 to 1989. He entered the NBA in 1989 as an assistant coach with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He later worked as an assistant with the San Antonio Spurs, Philadelphia 76ers, New York Knicks, and Houston Rockets. He was associate head coach of the Boston Celtics from 2007 to 2010, winning the 2008 NBA Finals. He became head coach of the Chicago Bulls in 2010, was named NBA Coach of the Year in 2011, and coached the Bulls until 2015. He was head coach of the Minnesota Timberwolves from 2016 to 2019, then became head coach of the New York Knicks. He won Coach of the Year again in 2021 and led the Knicks to the conference finals in 2025, after which he was fired.
