Tsavorite
Green grossular garnet discovered in Tanzania and Kenya.
Last updated
Tsavorite is a green variety of the garnet group species grossular, a calcium-aluminium garnet. Its color comes from trace amounts of vanadium or chromium. Discovered in 1967 by British gem prospector Campbell R. Bridges in Tanzania, it was later found in Kenya in 1971.
Tiffany and Co launched a marketing campaign in 1974 that brought broader recognition. The stone is named after Tsavo East National Park in Kenya. Gem-quality tsavorite is rare over several carats, though large crystals have been found, including a 925 carat crystal in 2006 that yielded a 325 carat faceted stone.
