History
Biloxi’s first pro baseball team was the Gulfport-Biloxi Sand Crabs, who played in the Class C Cotton States League in 1907. The next team, the Shuckers, came to town 108 years later, but their story starts in Nashville. The Nashville Sounds joined the Double-A Southern League as an expansion team in 1978. In 1984, Sounds president Larry Schmittou and other owners bought the Triple-A Evansville Triplets, hoping to move them to Nashville for 1985. The Southern League wanted Schmittou to give up his Double-A franchise, but he chose to move that team instead. After a planned move to Evansville fell through, Huntsville built Joe W. Davis Stadium, and the franchise became the Huntsville Stars in 1985. Twenty-nine years later, after several failed attempts to replace Huntsville’s old ballpark, the Stars were sold in January 2014 to Biloxi Baseball, led by majority owner Ken Young. Former owner Miles Prentice and other shareholders kept a minority stake. The team stayed in Huntsville through the 2014 season while a new park was built in Biloxi. The relocated club stayed in the Double-A Southern League as a Milwaukee Brewers affiliate, a link that started in 1999. Fans chose the name “Biloxi Shuckers” in a contest; other finalists were “Shrimpers,” “Black Jacks,” “Beacon,” “Mullets,” and “Schooners.” The name honors the city’s oyster and seafood history. The logo uses gulf blue, sand, coral, and black, and shows an open oyster with eyes and the team name. Because MGM Park wasn’t ready, the Shuckers played their first 54 games of 2015 on the road, including 15 games at Huntsville’s Joe W. Davis Stadium, but as the Shuckers, not the Stars.
