The movie begins after the events of Episode 3 of the TV series, when Kisaragi had sunk. The Mikawa Fleet (Furutaka, Aoba, Kako, Kinugasa, and Tenryū) engages in the Night Battle (Battle of Savo Island), where Chōkai uses a Searchlight and sustains medium damage, but they ultimately win. A new fleet girl emerges from the sea: Kisaragi, who is brought to a temporary base in the Solomon Islands but suffers from PTSD and amnesia, unable to remember anyone except Mutsuki. As the fleet celebrates victory in the Ironbottom Sound campaign, Kisaragi slowly begins turning into an Abyssal Vessel while retaining her consciousness and crying. Kaga reveals a secret: at the start of the war, there were two factions—Fleet Girls and Abyssal Vessels—and if a Fleet Girl sinks, she becomes an Abyssal Vessel, and vice versa. A crimson aura in some ocean areas indicates a source of heavy Abyssal power. Kaga was originally an Abyssal Vessel and retains her memory of that. The fleet launches an operation of four task forces to escort Fubuki into a dark portal in the Crimson Sea, the source of Abyssal power. After several battles, only Yamato, Mutsuki, and Fubuki reach the portal. Half-transformed Abyssal Kisaragi aids them, and Fubuki jumps into the portal, where she meets her dark persona, Abyssal Fubuki. After a mind battle, Fubuki and her doppelgänger become one, and the portal disappears. Abyssal Kisaragi disappears after exchanging last words with Mutsuki. In a post-credits scene, Mutsuki reunites with Kisaragi.
