A dystopian future epic inspired by Hindu scriptures.
Last updated
It is the most expensive Indian film ever made and grossed an estimated ₹1,180 crore worldwide.[1][2] Nag Ashwin wrote and directed the 2024 Indian Telugu-language film Kalki 2898 AD, which is categorized as an epic mythological science fiction film.[3]
Making and release
Principal photography began on 24 July 2021 at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad.[4][5] The film was made on a production budget of ₹600 crore.[6] It was released worldwide on 27 June 2024 in standard, IMAX, and 3D formats.[1] The film grossed ₹180 crore worldwide on its opening day.[7]
Following the success of Mahanati in 2019, Nag Ashwin mentioned he had been developing an original story for the project.[8] C. Aswani Dutt's Vyjayanthi Movies provided the funding for the production.[8] The cinematographer role was taken over by Djordje Stojiljkovic, who succeeded Dani Sanchez-Lopez.[9] The film's original release date was 9 May 2024, but it was delayed because post-production work was not finished.[1]
What the cited sources add
A Rediff article from July 2024 reports that Kamal Haasan was paid almost three times more than Amitabh Bachchan for the film.[10] The animated prelude "Bujji and Bhairava" streamed on Amazon Prime Video from May 31, 2024.[11] Djordje Stojiljkovic stated that Kalki 2898 AD is the first Indian film to explore the future of an Indian city in this manner.[12] The cinematographer noted that the film will be screened in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas of India.[12]
Disha Patani returned to Telugu films with this project after her debut in "Loafer"[13] The film's sub-worlds were delineated during the pre-production process.[12]
