Peter Thorwarth directed the 2021 action-horror vampire film Blood Red Sky, which he also co-wrote with Stefan Holtz; the movie is alternatively known as Transatlantic 473.[1] Netflix made the film available on 23 July 2021.[1]
Making and release
A Deadline Hollywood article from December 2019 described the film's plot as involving a woman with a mysterious illness forced into action when terrorists hijack a transatlantic overnight flight.[2] The Czech Film Commission records show filming dates from 2nd–10th March 2020, 21st July–22nd September 2020, and 19th–21st January 2021, totaling 55 days.[3] Locations included Prague, Zlicin studio, Smilkov, Kouty, Hermanicky, Arnostovice, Brno – Lisen, and Turany airport.[3] Czech locations represented Keflavik Air Force Base in Iceland and Frankfurt Airport.[3]
Production in Prague on the project, which was called Transatlantic 473 at the time, halted on 11 September 2020 because an extra had a positive COVID-19 test.[4] As part of a plan to put out at least one new movie each week, Netflix included Blood Red Sky among 71 original films it intended to release during 2021.[5] According to Netflix, within its initial four weeks the film had 50 million subscribers watching it, which made it the most successful German original title up to that point.[6] A few months after the first movie came out, Netflix reportedly started developing a sequel.[7]
What the cited sources add
The Czech Film Commission metadata confirms the film's production company as Rat Pack Filmproduktion GmbH and the Czech production company as Sirena Film.[3] A Giant Freakin Robot article from August 2021 reports that a trusted inside source learned Blood Red Sky 2 is in development at Netflix.[8] The Rotten Tomatoes critics consensus states that "Blood Red Sky makes the most of its high-concept vampire story, delivering a fast-paced treat for genre enthusiasts"[9] IndieWire placed the film on its 2025 list of "the 25 Scariest Movies on Netflix".[10]
The same record lists Christian Becker and Benjamin Munz as producers, and indicates Germany as the film's country of origin.[3] According to the article, the first movie sets up vampires that become more feral and monstrous with each feeding on human blood.[8]
