Pseudomonadota
A diverse phylum of gram-negative bacteria with pathogenic and free-living members.
Last updated
Pseudomonadota is a major phylum of gram-negative bacteria that includes both pathogenic and free-living genera.[1] Morphology, metabolic processes, and ecological roles vary widely among members of this phylum.[1]

Key facts and history
Pseudomonadota are nominally Gram-negative, with a unique outer membrane mainly composed of lipopolysaccharides.[2] Many microbiologists still prefer the name Proteobacteria, making this renaming a subject of ongoing debate.[3] Deltaproteobacteria and Oligoflexia were formerly considered part of this phylum.[4] Genomic marker analysis later showed that these groups are distinct from Pseudomonadota.[4]
Epsilonproteobacteria was also placed within the phylum, but whether it forms a monophyletic group is still debated.[5][6] Flagella are the primary means of movement for most Pseudomonadota, though some species are nonmotile or use gliding.[2]
What the cited sources add
The LPSN record states that Pseudomonadota was proposed as a phylum novum by Garrity et al. in 2021.[7] The LPSN gives the pronunciation of Pseudomonadota as "pse͡u-do-mo-na-DO-ta" and lists the type genus as Pseudomonas Migula 1894.[7]
