Content

One verse describes putting on a little Dylan and references songs from Blood on the Tracks, quoting "Idiot Wind" and mentioning "Tangled Up in Blue." Darius Rucker said Dylan's management initially had no problem with the lyrics but objected after the song became a hit. An out-of-court settlement of $350,000 was reached in 1995. The bridge includes the line "I'm such a baby 'cause the Dolphins make me cry," alluding to Rucker's favorite team, the Miami Dolphins.

Chart performance

In the United States, the song peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, number one on the Top 40/Mainstream chart, number three on the Adult Contemporary chart, and number two on both the Album Rock Tracks and Adult Top 40 charts. Billboard ranked it the 33rd-most-successful hit of 1995 and the 99th of 1996. In Canada it topped the RPM 100 Hit Tracks chart for three nonconsecutive weeks and was the year's second-most-successful song. It reached number four in Iceland and number six in El Salvador, and peaked at number 40 in Australia and number 17 in New Zealand, where it earned a double-platinum certification.

Music video

The music video had a sports theme incorporating elements from ESPN's SportsCenter. It featured SportsCenter anchors Keith Olbermann, Dan Patrick, Mike Tirico, Charley Steiner, and Chris Berman, along with professional athletes Dan Marino, Fred Couples, Gary McCord, Alonzo Mourning, Muggsy Bogues, Alex English, Walt Williams, and Charles Smith. Rucker said the video was his idea to meet their idols. Filming locations included Poolesville Golf Course and Potomac Valley Lodge in Poolesville, Maryland, Reckord Armory at the University of Maryland, and Hinsdale Central High School's football field in Hinsdale, Illinois.

Post Malone version

On February 25, 2021, Post Malone released a cover for the 25th anniversary of the Pokémon franchise. His version samples music from the video games and changes the Dolphins reference to reflect his being a Dallas Cowboys fan. Darius Rucker approved the cover on Twitter. The song appears on Pokémon 25: The Album, released in October 2021 through Capitol Records.
