History
The cheerleading squad existed since the team's inception, originally as the Dolphins Dolls with 125 girls aged 8 to 18, performing at the Miami Orange Bowl until 1977. The professional group formed in 1978 under owner Joe Robbie with 30 women, known as the Starbrites due to a sponsorship with Starbrite Car Polish. When that sponsorship ended in 1983, the Dolphins partnered with Burger King for a "Name the Cheerleaders" contest, resulting in the name Miami Dolphins Cheerleaders. Founder June Taylor retired in 1990 and was succeeded by Kathy Morton Shashaty, a former cheerleader from 1981–1985. Phillips left after 2007, and Emily Newton took over; another former DCC, Trisia Brown, became choreographer.
