Bomberman '93

A maze game with interactive stages and five-player deathmatch.

Bomberman '93

Bomberman '93 (ボンバーマン'93, Bonbāman kyūjūsan) is a maze game in the Bomberman series from Hudson Soft. It first hit the PC Engine in Japan on December 11, 1992, then arrived in the West for the TurboGrafx-16 in 1993. A PC re-release came in 2002 as part of the *Bomberman Collection* compilation disc, which also included the TurboGrafx-16 versions of *Bomberman* and *Bomberman World*. The game later appeared on the Virtual Console for the Wii on November 21, 2006 in North America, December 8, 2006 in Europe, and July 6, 2007 in Australia, with full multiplayer intact. A Wii U re-release followed on December 28, 2016 in Japan, November 30, 2017 in North America, and December 14, 2017 in Europe. A sequel, *Bomberman '94*, was later released.

**Story** Black Bomberman steals seven chips from the pan-galactic bureau's mother computer and scatters them across planets in the Magellan solar system. The ace detective Bomber Cop—also known as White Bomberman—must recover them.

**Gameplay** The core structure matches earlier Bomberman titles. Players guide Bomberman through block-filled mazes, laying bombs that erupt in a cross-shaped explosion after a few seconds. These explosions destroy blocks, enemies, or Bomberman himself. If an explosion hits another bomb, that bomb detonates instantly. This formula applies to both single-player and multiplayer modes.

**Single-player** The single-player campaign has seven themed worlds, each with eight stages. Each stage is a block-filled maze with enemies. Players use bombs to clear blocks and defeat enemies; once all enemies are gone, a portal to the next stage opens. Power-ups hidden under blocks grant extra bombs, increased firepower, or abilities like kicking bombs. The eighth stage of each world is a boss battle. Unlike earlier games, stages feature interactive elements such as conveyor belts and teleporters. Progress can be saved via a password system or limited save memory.

**Multiplayer** Up to five players compete in timed deathmatches. Each player collects power-ups to destroy rivals while staying alive; the last Bomberman standing wins a round. Some blocks contain skulls instead of power-ups, which are harmful. Players can choose from multiple stages, each with its own theme and gimmick. The Virtual Console version supports only four players using Wii Remotes; the five-player mode is activated by holding the R butt

Lore & Background

The multiplayer mode allows up to five players to compete in a timed deathmatch, collecting power-ups to destroy opponents while staying alive. Unlike single-player, some blocks contain detrimental skulls instead of power-ups. Multiple stages with unique themes and gimmicks are available. The Virtual Console version supports only four players using Wii Remotes, but the five-player mode can be activated by holding the R button on an attached GameCube controller while starting the game from the Wii menu.

Reader's Guide

Bomberman '93 is significant as a key entry in the Bomberman series, refining the classic formula with more interactive single-player stages and a highly regarded multiplayer mode. It was awarded Best TurboGrafx-16 Game of 1993 by Electronic Gaming Monthly. In 2009, IGN placed the game on their top 16 TurboGrafx-16 games list, calling it 'one of Hudson's best editions of the game (next to Saturn Bomberman)'. In 2020, Paste ranked it fifth on their 'The 16 Best TurboGrafx-16 Games' list. The game was re-released for PCs in 2002 as part of Bomberman Collection, and later for the Virtual Console on Wii in 2006–2007, and for Wii U in 2016–2017. It spawned a sequel titled Bomberman '94. Its legacy lies in its balanced single-player and multiplayer design, which influenced later entries in the series.

Where can I play Bomberman '93 today without original hardware?

The title appeared on the 2002 Bomberman Collection PC disc, on the Wii Virtual Console beginning in late 2006, and on a subsequent Wii U re-release. All digital re-releases retained the full multiplayer functionality.

What sets Bomberman '93 apart from other entries in the Bomberman series?

Its interactive stages introduce moving or destructible elements that alter the maze mid-round, adding a layer of unpredictability beyond static walls. Combined with five-player local multiplayer, it stands out as one of the more dynamic TurboGrafx-16-era maze games.

What other games are bundled with Bomberman '93 in the Bomberman Collection?
