PlanetSide Arena
A PlanetSide 2 spin-off with 1,000-player matches and multiple modes.
Daybreak Game Company created PlanetSide Arena as a spin-off of PlanetSide 2, a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter that was later discontinued. Each match could host more than 1,000 players and included capture the flag, team deathmatch, and battle royale modes. It launched in early access on Steam for Windows on September 19, 2019, but was cancelled on January 10, 2020, because not enough players were participating.

Gameplay
PlanetSide Arena reused many weapons, environments, mechanics, and vehicles from PlanetSide 2, set on the continent Amerish years after the original conflict on Auraxis. Game modes included conquest, capture the flag, team deathmatch, and battle royale, all played on a single 8 km by 8 km map. Players chose from three classes (reduced from six in PlanetSide 2), each with unique abilities and a jetpack. Some modes allowed third-person perspective. Weapons could be picked up on the battlefield or obtained at round start through a loot box system.
History
Daybreak Game Company announced PlanetSide Arena on December 13, 2018, with a planned January 29, 2019 launch on Steam as a non-free-to-play title featuring a battle pass and microtransactions. The release was delayed multiple times before entering Early Access on September 19, 2019, with a microtransaction model for loot boxes containing cosmetics and items. On January 10, 2020, servers were taken down and all purchases refunded. Low player counts, attributed to competition from games like Apex Legends and dissatisfaction among PlanetSide 2 players, made viable matches impossible. An all-time low of one concurrent player was recorded near the end. Many assets and graphical improvements were later incorporated into PlanetSide 2, including a ForgeLight engine upgrade for DirectX 11.
