The Death of Captain America, also called The Death of the Dream, is an eighteen-issue Captain America story arc written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Steve Epting, beginning in Captain America (vol. 5) #25. That issue, in which Steve Rogers dies, was the best-selling comic of March 2007.

After Civil War, Captain America is taken into S.H.I.E.L.D. custody and assassinated there by Crossbones and a brainwashed Sharon Carter on the Red Skull's orders. Tony Stark and Black Widow hunt the killers while Falcon follows his own leads and Bucky Barnes sets out to kill Stark. A letter from Rogers leads Stark to offer Bucky the shield, which he accepts on condition that he answers to no one. Meanwhile the Red Skull, living inside Aleksander Lukin's mind, uses the Kronas Corporation to cripple the US economy, backs his puppet candidate Gordon Wright, and kidnaps the pregnant Sharon Carter. Rogers returned in Captain America: Reborn.
