Ministrombus

A genus of true conchs with debated nomenclatural origins.

Last updated

Ministrombus is a genus of sea snails, marine gastropod mollusks belonging to the family Strombidae, commonly known as true conchs. The genus contains both living and fossil species.

There has been disagreement among researchers about the validity of the name Ministrombus. Some argue that the name was not properly established by Bandel in 2007, and instead credit it to Dekkers in 2010, who used it at the genus level and attributed it to Bandel. Although Bandel did not provide a clear diagnosis for the subgenus, he included only the type species, which he did diagnose, and this is considered sufficient to make the name available.

The recognized species are: †Ministrombus abrardi, Ministrombus athenius, Ministrombus aurantius, Ministrombus caledonicus, Ministrombus minimus, Ministrombus oceanicus, Ministrombus rhinoceros, and Ministrombus variabilis.

Background

The name Ministrombus was first used by Bandel in 2007 for a subgenus, but some authors argued it was not available from that work because Bandel did not explicitly diagnose the new subgenus. However, Bandel included only the type species in the subgenus, which he did diagnose, and this is taken to have conferred availability to the name. Dekkers later used the name at the rank of genus in 2010, attributing it to Bandel 2007. The genus contains both living and fossil species, with species described as recently as 2024.

Species include Ministrombus minimus, originally described by Linnaeus in 1771, and Ministrombus variabilis, described by Swainson in 1820. New species have been added in the 2020s, such as Ministrombus aurantius, Ministrombus caledonicus, and Ministrombus oceanicus, all described by S. J. Maxwell in 2022, and Ministrombus rhinoceros described by Dekkers in 2024. A fossil species, Ministrombus abrardi, was described by Dekkers in 2022.
