Dorsanum is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks, commonly known as sea snails. These animals belong to the subfamily Dorsaninae within the family Nassariidae, which also includes the Nassa mud snails and dog whelks. The genus contains both living and fossil species. One recognized subgenus is Dorsanum (Dorsanum), established by Gray in 1847.

Species assigned to Dorsanum include † Dorsanum estotiensis, † Dorsanum gaasensis, † Dorsanum javanum, † Dorsanum laeve, † Dorsanum meyni, Dorsanum miran, and † Dorsanum subpolitum. Several other species once placed in this genus have since been reclassified as synonyms, such as Dorsanum belangeri (now Bullia tranquebarica), Dorsanum granulosum (now Naytia granulosa), Dorsanum gruveli (now Bullia gruveli), Dorsanum mauritianum (now Bullia mauritiana), Dorsanum moniliferum (now Buccinanops monilifer), and Dorsanum terebraeforme (now Bullia terebraeformis). The subgenus Dorsanum (Adinus) is considered a synonym of Bullia.

Background

The genus Dorsanum was established by Gray in 1847. It belongs to the subfamily Dorsaninae within the family Nassariidae, which comprises the Nassa mud snails or dog whelks. The genus contains both living and fossil species, with the extant species Dorsanum miran described by Bruguière in 1789. Several fossil species have been described from various authors, including Lozouet (1999), K. Martin (1931), van Voorthuysen (1944), Beyrich (1854), and d'Orbigny (1852).

Taxonomic revisions have led to many species originally placed in Dorsanum being moved to other genera. For instance, Dorsanum belangeri is now considered a synonym of Bullia tranquebarica, and Dorsanum granulosum is treated as Naytia granulosa. Other species have been reassigned to Bullia, such as Dorsanum gruveli, Dorsanum mauritianum, and Dorsanum terebraeforme. The subgenus Dorsanum (Adinus) H. Adams & A. Adams, 1853 is considered a synonym of Bullia Gray, 1833.

The genus has been studied in phylogenetic and systematic contexts, notably in a 2016 revision of the Nassariidae by Galindo, Puillandre, Utge, Lozouet, and Bouchet, which examined the relationships within the family.
