Cerithium novaehollandiae
A marine gastropod with a flat-sided, turreted shell.
Last updated
Cerithium novaehollandiae is a marine snail belonging to the family Cerithiidae. Its shell reaches 18.7 mm in length and 9.4 mm in diameter. The shell is medium-sized, with flat sides and a slightly turreted shape. Strong, narrow axial folds curve slightly and swell near the suture on both the upper and lower parts.
On the body whorl, three slightly beaded spiral ridges stand out more than the ones between them, with the largest spiral at the periphery. Below this, on the base, several prominent spirals appear, the one nearest the periphery being the largest. A broad varix sits on the body whorl opposite the aperture, and the inner lip is callused and slightly detached. This species ranges from Borneo to New Caledonia, and is also found off the Australian coasts of the Northern Territory, Queensland, and Western Australia.
