Cerithidium

A genus of sea snails with disputed generic boundaries.

Last updated

Cerithidium is a genus of marine gastropod mollusks, specifically sea snails, belonging to the family Cerithiidae. For Indo-Pacific species, the genus has been treated as valid based on the argument that it predates the genus Clathrofenella.

However, the type species from the Mediterranean is actually a member of the genus Bittium, indicating that this classification needs reconsideration. The genus includes several species, such as Cerithidium actinium, Cerithidium australiense, Cerithidium cerithinum, Cerithidium californica, Cerithidium diplax, the extinct †Cerithidium fragrans, Cerithidium fuscum, Cerithidium liratum, the extinct †Cerithidium perminimum, Cerithidium perparvulum, the extinct †Cerithidium plebeium, and Cerithidium submamillatum. Two species, Cerithidium pusillum and Cerithidium reticulatum, have been placed into synonymy with other species within the genus.
