Charlton was a member of the Busby Babes, discovered by club scout Joe Armstrong in 1953. Law arrived from Torino for a club record £115,000 in 1962. Best was discovered by Armstrong in 1961. Charlton debuted on 6 October 1956, scoring twice against Charlton Athletic. Law debuted on 18 August 1962, scoring against West Bromwich Albion. Best debuted against West Bromwich Albion on 14 September 1963. All three first started together on 18 January 1964 in a 4–1 win over West Bromwich Albion, with Denis Law and George Best scoring; the fourth goal was an own goal by John Talbut. Each won the Ballon d'Or in the 1960s: Law in 1964, Charlton in 1966, Best in 1968. Combined, they scored 665 goals in 1633 games. A statue of the trio was unveiled outside Old Trafford in 2008. Best died on 25 November 2005; Charlton died on 21 October 2023; Law died on 17 January 2025.

Reader's Guide

The trio are celebrated as the core of Manchester United's first European Cup-winning side. Their statue features on the club's 2017–18 third shirt. Later trios dubbed the 'new Trinity' include Giggs–Scholes–Neville and Ronaldo–Rooney–Tevez.
