Whiskeyjack is introduced as a veteran soldier who, seven years after the assassination of Emperor Kellanved and Dancer, serves under High Fist Dujek in the Malazan 2nd Army. He leads the Bridgeburners, a legendary elite unit that suffers near-total destruction during the fall of Pale. After the siege, Whiskeyjack is severely reduced in rank and sent to undermine Darujhistan from within. In Their Own Story

Later, Dujek and Whiskeyjack lead the 2nd Army into rebellion against Laseen, seeking an alliance with Rake against the Pannion Seer's advancing holy war.
