Ganoes Paran

From child witness to Bridgeburner Captain during the Genabackis Campaign.

Ganoes Paran is a central figure in Steven Erikson's high fantasy novel Gardens of the Moon. At the age of twelve, he witnessed the devastating attack on the Mouse Quarter in Malaz City during the 96th year of the Empire. Even as a child, Paran aspired to become a soldier, a dream that faced reservations from veteran soldiers like Whiskeyjack. Seven years later, following the assassination of Emperor Kellanved and his ally Dancer, Paran had risen to the rank of Captain within the Malazan 2nd Army.

Lore & Background

Paran serves as the nominal commander of a severely reduced group of surviving Bridgeburners. Originally an elite unit, the Bridgeburners suffered near-total destruction during the siege of Pale, where they fought against Anomander Rake and the Tiste Andii. Following this conflict, Paran leads these remnants toward Darujhistan to determine why gods and magical forces are increasingly involved in the campaign. The narrative notes that he travels alongside Tattersail, one of the few mages who survived the Siege of Pale. While Paran holds the rank of Captain, his authority is nominal, reflecting the fractured state of his unit after Laseen's seizure of power.

Reader's Guide

Readers encounter Ganoes Paran first as a twelve-year-old witness to violence, then seven years later as a Captain navigating a complex war. He is part of the Bridgeburner contingent sent to undermine Darujhistan from within. His role is defined by his nominal command over a depleted force and his partnership with mage Tattersail.
