Jalgaon Bharit Brinjal is a variety of brinjal grown in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is a common and widely cultivated crop in areas like Asoda, Bamnod, Mamurabad, Bhadli, Bhalod and Bhusaval of Jalgaon district located in the Khandesh region of North Maharashtra. Under its Geographical Indication tag, it is referred to as "Jalgaon Bharit Brinjal." It became the first brinjal variety from Maharashtra and the 23rd type of goods from Maharashtra to earn the GI tag.
Description
This brinjal variety is large with soft skin, weighing between 500g and 2500g, and contains few seeds. Its shape is long, oval, and slender, with pale green skin marked by white stripes.
Cultivation relies on fertile, rich, medium black soil and a favorable climate. Farmers have preserved this traditional variety for over five centuries. It is specifically used for making the spicy dish Khandeshi Bharit.
Geographical indication
The Geographical Indication tag was awarded on 3 June 2016 and is valid until 29 September 2024. Navnirmiti Shetkari Mandal from Asoda proposed the GI registration, filing the application in September 2014. The tag, granted by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai, makes the name exclusive to brinjal grown in the region. It was the 23rd type of goods from Maharashtra to earn a GI tag.
