Lore & Background

Revolutionary Girl Utena was created after Kunihiko Ikuhara left Toei Animation in 1996, frustrated by lack of creative control while directing the Sailor Moon anime. He initially conceived Utena as a mainstream shōjo series to capitalize on Sailor Moon's success, but the direction shifted dramatically toward an avant-garde and surrealist tone. The series draws inspiration from the all-female Takarazuka Revue and the experimental theater of Shūji Terayama, whose collaborator J. A. Seazer composed the songs.

Reader's Guide

The series is divided into three story arcs: the Student Council Saga (episodes 1–12), the Black Rose Saga (episodes 13–24), and the Apocalypse Saga (episodes 25–39). Utena Tenjou, inspired by a prince she met as a child, vows to become a prince herself. At Ohtori Academy, she wins a duel and becomes the fiancée of Anthy Himemiya, the Rose Bride. She defends Anthy from duelists manipulated by Souji Mikage and later by Akio Ohtori, Anthy's brother. In the climax, Utena discovers Akio is the prince from her past; she is stabbed by Anthy but pries open a gate, briefly joining hands with Anthy before vanishing. Anthy later leaves the school to find Utena.
