The story is set in a world plagued by the Daemonia, creatures that take advantage of negative emotions and transform humans into monsters. Girls from 22 special bloodlines are chosen to wield the power of the Elemental Tarot and confront them. The main protagonist is Akari Taiyo, a twelve-year-old girl who becomes the wielder of card 'The Sun' and joins the organization Sefiro Fiore. She soon learns that to defeat a Daemonia, the afflicted human must perish as well, leading to unbearable guilt.

The Protagonist Quartet and Their Turmoil

The four central girls each carry a Major Arcana card and a distinct fighting style. Akari wields a flaming rapier and can accelerate plant growth; Luna summons magic vines and heals, bonded to "The Moon"; Seira looses icy arrows as "The Star," driven by grief over her childhood friend Manami's death; and Ginka, speaking in a Kansai accent, conjures coins that reshape into blades and shields under "Temperance." Their bonds fracture under pressure. Luna's jealousy over Akari's friendships, rooted in her admiration for her missing twin Serena, spirals when Cerebrum impersonates Akari and forces a Diabolic Tarot card into Luna, turning her into a demonic wolf hybrid before she regains her humanity. Ginka vanishes after destroying her counterpart Daemonia, only reappearing in episode twelve to rescue Seira and Luna. Meanwhile, Akari's cousin Fuyuna is possessed by a Daemonia, transforms into a plant monster, and is unknowingly killed by Akari, her existence erased entirely.

Sefiro Fiore and Its Unconventional Faculty

The Nagataki Branch of Sefiro Fiore functions as both a command center and a school, staffed by an eclectic roster of card-wielding teachers. Etia Visconti, holder of "The World," serves as head and literature teacher, often prioritizing her students over organizational orders. Ariel Valtiel Westcott, the P.E. instructor and bearer of "Judgement," brings a strict counterweight. Priscilla Twilight wields magic daggers under "The Fool" while teaching music, and Meltina Melvis, armed with a Jack-o'-lantern-like artifact, handles chemistry as "The Magician." Three homunculus girls—Itsuki, Mutsumi, and Nanase Tendo—operate the command center, conducting research and using a dimensional device to deploy the Elemental Tarot users to Daemonia attack sites; their shared card is "Wheel of Fortune." Adding a touch of whimsy, a talking crow named Laplace provides counseling to Etia, accompanied by a talking cat called Schrödinger.
