The series originated when Yomiko Advertising, after the popularity of Magical Princess Minky Momo (animated by Ashi Productions), approached Studio Pierrot to create a new majokko anime. This led to Magical Angel Creamy Mami, followed by three other series in the 1980s. Within Studio Pierrot, the term 'magical girl' was used, though 'majokko' also appeared. Minky Momo and Creamy Mami together sparked the 'Second Magical Girl Boom.' After a 12-year gap, Fancy Lala aired in 1998 on TV Tokyo but did not become a big hit.
