History
A club calling itself the Edinburgh University Foot Ball Club played three games in 1851, one against the 93rd regiment, but then vanished from the records for more than ten years. It finally lifted its first trophy, the Edinburgh Shield, in 1883. Since then, it has become the most successful university side in Scotland, racking up 26 Queen’s Park Shield wins—including eight straight from 1973–74 to 1981–82—along with single victories in the Edinburgh Shield, East of Scotland Amateur Cup, Scottish Qualifying Cup (South), and BUSA Cup, plus three East of Scotland Qualifying Cups and three King Cups.
More recently, the club won the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup in 2005 and finished second in the East of Scotland Premier Division in 2007–08. In October 2006, a 3–0 win over Vale of Leithen took them to the Scottish Cup first round for the first time since 1972–73, and a victory over Keith the next month pushed them to the second round for only the second time ever, 106 years after their first appearance at that stage. Cowdenbeath ended the run with a 5–1 defeat on 9 December 2006.
After the Scottish Qualifying Cup was scrapped, the club gained full SFA membership and direct Scottish Cup entry; one season they got a first-round bye, beat Deveronvale, then lost to Cove Rangers. They joined the Lowland Football League in 2014–15, peaking at 6th place in 2015–16. Dorian Ogunro, a former player, coached the Under 21s before becoming head coach from 2013 to 2023. Sean McAuley took over in June 2023 but resigned after two seasons that saw back-to-back relegations.
Now in the East of Scotland First Division, the club appointed ex-Hearts forward and former Bonnyrigg Rose manager Calum Elliot in June 2025.
