Plot
After a bad experience at a store, Louie meets his uncle Excelsior at the Russian Tea Room. Excelsior reveals he encountered Louie's estranged father in Boston, who lamented being alone. Louie develops a rash, and his doctor suggests visiting his father. He travels to Boston, vomits on a car, argues with a bystander, and gets a nosebleed. The bystander advises him to see his dad. Louie panics at the door, flees on a Can-Am Spyder, reaches the harbor, and escapes on a go-fast boat, laughing alone at sea.
Reception
In its original American broadcast, "Dad" was seen by an estimated 0.84 million household viewers with a 0.4 in the 18-49 demographics, a 20% increase in viewership from the previous episode which had 0.70 million viewers. The episode received critical acclaim. Eric Goldman of IGN gave it a perfect 10 out of 10, calling it an instant favorite and noting that while it moved between scenarios, it all told one story about Louie's daddy issues, with each sequence having its own energy and humor. Nathan Rabin of The A.V. Club gave it a "B+" grade, describing it as an alternately exhilarating and maddening exercise in obfuscation and ambiguity that requires active engagement. Alan Sepinwall of HitFix wrote that it was the most he laughed all season, praising the comic vignettes, though he felt they did not quite fit together and found the fantasy ending abrupt.
