Herbert became the Chargers' starting quarterback in the second game of his rookie season. He set several rookie statistical records, including the most touchdown passes and 300-yard games, and was named AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. In 2021, he became the first quarterback in Chargers history to throw for over 5,000 yards and was named to his first Pro Bowl. He signed a five-year, $262.5 million contract extension ahead of the 2023 season.

Herbert was born in Eugene, Oregon, and attended Sheldon High School. He committed to Oregon in October 2015. In college, he led the Ducks to a 12–2 record in 2019, including a Rose Bowl win where he was named Offensive MVP. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in general science and won the William V. Campbell Trophy.
