The boy's search for his sister is the whole of Limbo's story: a nameless boy awakens in a forest on the "edge of hell" and travels through dangerous environments and traps looking for her.

He survives the giant spider, a colony of other boys and the crumbling city and industrial areas beyond, glimpsing a female character he thinks might be his sister without being able to reach her. In the end he is thrown back into the opening forest and finds the girl again; she stands up startled, and the game cuts to black. The minimal story polarised critics - some found deeper meaning in it, others felt the thin plot and abrupt ending held the game back.
