The Ambiguity of the Ending
Limbo's abrupt, deliberately open ending.
Limbo ends abruptly: after the final puzzle the boy is thrown through a pane of glass back into the forest from the beginning, walks a short distance and again encounters the girl, who stands up startled as he approaches. At that point the screen cuts to black.
Lore & Background
Game director Arnt Jensen purposely left the game with an open ending, with a specific interpretation that only he knew, though after release he noted that some players on forums had suggested resolutions "scary close" to his ideas. Critics were split: some found the open-ended work tied well to the game's mechanics, while others felt the lack of a significant plot and the abrupt ending detracted from it.
