History
Greystones A.F.C. came together in 1924, born from a group of local teenagers who wanted to create the town’s first football side. The initial gathering happened in May 1923, inside the kitchen of Hugh and Henry Lawless on North Beach, close to the marina. Alongside the Lawless brothers, the founding players were Tom Quinn, Larry Byrne, and Frankie Ward. By the following year, the team had entered the Dublin Boys Realm League, which held its matches every Sunday in the Phoenix Park. Since no Sunday bus service existed, the players had to take a boat, then a train, and finally a tram just to get to their games.
The club shifted locations around Greystones, even spending some time in Delgany, before finally settling at Archfield in 1936. In 1947, they joined the newly formed Wicklow League. Their kit was red with a black and white trim. The 1960s were tough, and the club nearly shut down. Volunteers Pat Smith and Willie Wall stepped in to keep things going, and through their efforts, the club grew again during the 1970s and 1980s. In 1993, Greystones A.F.C. moved into the Leinster Senior League Major Sunday Division and began climbing the ranks.
A big moment came in 2000, when the club won a treble: the George Moore Cup, the Finches Gilligan Cup, and Division 1A of the Leinster Senior League. That same season, the league named them the 'Most Progressive Club' for 2000–01. In 2002, they reached the second round of the FAI Cup, hosting Sligo Rovers at home. Though they lost 1–0, their defensive effort earned praise. Promotion to the Leinster Senior League’s top division, the Senior Division, followed in May 2005. After finishing sixth in the league, the club hit another milestone in 2006 by winning the Metropolitan Cup.
In 2011, Greystones made it to the third round of the FAI Cup, where they faced League of Ireland side Shelbourne at the Carlisle Grounds. A crowd of 600 watched Shelbourne win 3–1. The club returned to the top division of the Leinster Senior League for the 2014–15 season, finishing eleventh, just one spot above relegation. Before any merger, the club fielded two teams: one in the Sunday Senior 1 division and another in the Saturday Major 1 division of the Leinster Senior League.
