Legoland (video game)
A child-friendly Legoland-themed construction and management sim.
Last updated
Released on 1 May 2000 for Windows, Legoland is a building-and-management sim set in the theme park world. Its gameplay, simpler and more kid-friendly than the similar RollerCoaster Tycoon series, features voice acting by Justin Fletcher.
Gameplay
In Story Mode, the player completes five tutorial levels and then ten Miniland levels to rebuild the Park. Completing the game rewards the player with a printable certificate.
Cutscenes show Professor Voltage traveling back in time, discovering new buildings and rides, and using his Duplicator Ray to collect hologram-like copies. Free Play Mode lets the player create a park without objectives or limits on money or time, but only using unlocked sets and with limits on rides, decorations, and restaurants. Completing Story Mode unlocks all content for Free Play Mode.
Development
Legoland was developed by a small team of six people, consisting of three artists and three programmers. A PlayStation version was planned alongside the PC release but was canceled because the system could not handle the graphics. Two minigames were designed—a Wild West game like Frogger and a jungle game similar to River Raid—but both were cut due to time constraints. Minifigures were rendered in real time, while backgrounds and buildings were pre-rendered; pre-rendered characters were initially planned but caused animation issues on upside-down rides.
