Overview

Leeds United secured the last league championship before the Premier League began, driven by players including Gordon Strachan, Lee Chapman, David Batty and Gary McAllister. Their title was confirmed on 26 April 1992 after a 3–2 win at Sheffield United, combined with Manchester United's 2–0 defeat at Liverpool. Newly promoted Sheffield Wednesday finished third and qualified for the UEFA Cup. Defending champions Arsenal slipped to fourth without seriously challenging for the title.

Liverpool, under Graeme Souness for his first full season, fell to sixth but won the FA Cup. Everton, Liverpool's Merseyside rivals, ended 12th, three places lower than the previous season. On 25 April 1992, newly promoted West Ham United were relegated after losing 1–0 at Coventry City. That victory also relegated Notts County, another newly promoted side, making their 2–0 loss at Manchester City irrelevant.

On the final day, Luton Town needed to win at Notts County and for Coventry to lose at Aston Villa. Coventry lost 2–0, but Luton lost 2–1, keeping Coventry up and sending Luton down after ten seasons. Southampton striker Alan Shearer, aged 21, was the subject of transfer speculation involving Liverpool and Manchester United during autumn, but he remained at Southampton until season's end. Shearer earned his first senior England cap in February 1992 and scored on debut.

Sheffield Wednesday's David Hirst, another English striker, was among the division's leading scorers, having helped the Owls win the League Cup and gain promotion in 1990–91.
