Background
The FA Community Shield originated in 1908 as the FA Charity Shield, initially between top professional and amateur teams. From 1921 it was played between the Football League champions and FA Cup winners. Leeds United made their third Shield appearance, having won in 1969 and lost in 1974. Liverpool appeared for the eighteenth time, with thirteen wins (five shared) and four losses. The 1992 match was the last contested by a Football League champion, as the Premier League formed that year. Wembley Stadium hosted the Shield; from 2001 matches moved to the Millennium Stadium during Wembley's refurbishment.
