The Song Remains the Same (film)

Led Zeppelin's 1976 concert film, shot at Madison Square Garden in July 1973.

The Song Remains the Same is a 1976 concert film of Led Zeppelin. Most of it was shot over three nights at Madison Square Garden in New York at the end of the band's 1973 North American tour, with extra footage filmed later at Shepperton Studios on a copy of the stage. It premiered in New York on 20 October 1976 and came with a soundtrack album of the same name.

Director Joe Massot began the project in July 1973 at Peter Grant's invitation, but Grant later replaced him with Peter Clifton, who found gaps in the concert footage and staged the Shepperton re-shoots. Alongside the live songs, the film has fantasy sequences built around each band member and documentary scenes, including the theft of the band's concert takings from a safe deposit box at New York's Drake Hotel.

The film did well at the box office, but critics, and Plant and John Paul Jones, were unimpressed at the time. It nonetheless became a cult favourite, and until the 2003 Led Zeppelin DVD it was the only official live film of the band. A reissue with a new sound mix and previously unseen songs followed in 2007.
