The Kuun-Lai

Lore & Background

Over time, dragons retreated deeper into the spirit realm, leaving their physical forms as guardians of this land. The region became a symbol of Ionian independence from external aggression, particularly during conflicts with Noxus. While human empires sought to conquer territory for resources, the Kuun-Lai remained largely untouched by industrialization, preserved by those who understood that disturbing its slumbering power could unleash catastrophic consequences upon all of Runeterra.

Reader's Guide

The Kuun-Lai represents the ancient spiritual heart of eastern Runeterra, functioning less as a political state and more as a sacred sanctuary guarded by tradition. Its primary goal is the preservation of natural balance against the encroaching corruption of magic and war. While it lacks a singular ruler, its influence is wielded through the Dragon Ascendants and the Kinkou order, who act as stewards rather than conquerors. Members include the ancient dragon spirits that slumber beneath the peaks, alongside human monks dedicated to maintaining harmony between the physical and spirit worlds.

They do not seek expansion but rather protection of their borders from those who would exploit the land’s potent energy for power. In the broader conflict of Runeterra, Kuun-Lai serves as a buffer zone and spiritual anchor. During times of great upheaval, such as the Noxian invasion of Ionia, this region became a focal point for magical resistance. Its role remains defensive; it is a fortress of nature that resists domination by empires like Noxus or Demacia, ensuring that the old magic remains untamed and free from human greed.
