Reception

The soundtrack received generally mixed reviews from music critics. AllMusic described Geoff Zanelli's score as moody, nuanced orchestral pieces that heighten the film's drama and reveal delicate sensitivity, calling the album an excellent counterpoint to the pop-oriented soundtrack. Kat Brown of Empire Online gave the soundtrack three stars out of five, noting that the album is built from alt-rock, rap and balladry, with a cheery opener from Nada Surf followed by dirges from This World Fair and Guster.

Brown found Afroman's "Because I Got High" too linked to Jay and Silent Bob, but praised the inclusion of Noiseshaper's eerie reggae, Priscilla Ahn's sweet tones, Thomas J. Mitchell's "Loving You", and Lou Rawls' "You'll Never Find Another Love Like Mine". Matt Millstein of Soundtrack.net gave the soundtrack two-and-a-half stars out of five, stating that the song soundtrack feels lackluster and thrown together, with no flow or common thread. Millstein compared it to a confusing mix CD from a friend, citing the range from Lou Rawls to Guster to Buckcherry to Cee-Lo Green's "Love Stink".

He noted that the original song "Don't Make Me Wait" by This World Fair, co-written by composer Geoff Zanelli, integrates the film's love theme, but concluded that the album lacks focus and a general flow from song to song.
