Austin FC is the first top-division major professional sports team in the Austin area. The club's crest was designed by local brand studio The Butler Bros, featuring the color 'Bright Verde', intertwined oaks, and four roots representing the compass directions of Austin. The club's first head coach was Josh Wolff, hired in July 2019, and Claudio Reyna was hired as Sporting Director in November 2019. The first player signed was Cecilio Dominguez in July 2020.

Alexander Ring was named the first club captain. The club's first MLS match was a 0–2 loss to LAFC on April 17, 2021. Their first victory came the following week against the Colorado Rapids, 3–1, with Cecilio Dominguez scoring the club's first MLS goal. The home opener was a 0–0 draw with San Jose Earthquakes on June 19, 2021.

The first home victory was a 4–1 win over Portland Timbers on July 1, 2021, with Diego Fagúndez scoring the first home goal. Sebastián Driussi was signed on July 29, 2021, and became the first player to score 10, 20, and 30 career goals for the club, and the club's first All-Star. Owen Wolff signed as the first homegrown player on September 9, 2021. In 2022, Austin FC started the season with an MLS record 10 goals in their first two matches.

They won the Copa Tejas on July 16, 2022, their first trophy. They clinched their first playoff berth with a 3–0 home win over Real Salt Lake, where Moussa Djitte scored the first hat trick in club history. They won their first playoff game at home over Real Salt Lake in a penalty shootout after a 2–2 draw, then advanced to the Western Conference Final, losing 3–0 to LAFC. In August 2022, the club announced a reserves team, Austin FC II, for MLS Next Pro in 2023.

In April 2023, Claudio Reyna was no longer listed as a technical advisor on the Austin FC website. In June 2023, Rodolfo Borrell was announced as the new Sporting Director. Based on their 2022 finish, Austin FC qualified for the 2023 CONCACAF Champions League, losing 3–2 on aggregate to Violette AC. In May 2023, they lost 2–0 to Chicago Fire in the U.S. Open Cup. In the 2023 Leagues Cup, they lost 3–1 to Mazatlán and 3–1 to FC Juárez, failing to advance.
