Gameplay
Dynasty Warriors 5 is a 3D hack and slash game building on previous Dynasty Warriors titles. Musou Mode offers chronologically consecutive battle stages for a chosen character, with animated and voiced storytelling. Free Mode lets players replay completed levels individually. Both modes support two-player cooperative play. Challenge Mode provides specialized stages with time trials and other objectives. The stronghold feature from Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires returns, introducing bases that require protection or can be captured for bonuses. Extreme mode allows item purchases, while the Encyclopedia describes every officer, and Options stores videos and adjusts settings.
Expansions
Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends, released September 15, 2005 in Japan and November 16, 2005 in North America for PlayStation 2, is a minor expansion. It requires the Dynasty Warriors 5 disc to play Musou Mode or Free Mode. It brings back Xtreme Mode and Legend Mode from Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends and introduces Destiny Mode. In Xtreme Mode, the player's character must survive as long as possible while collecting gold dropped by enemies to regain health and temporarily increase stats. In Destiny Mode, the player creates a custom character and joins the Kingdom of Shu, Wei, or Wu, starting as a basic soldier with only two fundamental hits, protected by a chosen officer who heals the character when nearby. A unique feature allows the player to betray one force by accepting a letter from another ruler, potentially setting a ruse with their original commander to ambush the opposing commander. Shin Sangokumusou 4: Special, another expansion, was released December 22, 2006 on Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows in Japan and later in Taiwan, but not elsewhere.
