The Mako Goku Uniform is constructed with a special material known as Life Fibers (Seimei Sen'i; lit. "Life Battle-Fibers"), which give wearers superhuman abilities. At Honnouji Academy, students wear Goku Uniforms (Gokuseifuku) that are ranked according to the school's stratified class structure. Mako, as a no-star student, wears a lower-ranked uniform compared to the Elite Four or Satsuki Kiryuin. The uniform allows Mako to participate in the violent conflicts that arise from Ryuko Matoi's search for her father's killer and her confrontation with Satsuki Kiryuin's student council.

In the final battle against Ragyo Kiryuin, Mako joins other characters in offering her Goku Uniform to power up Senketsu, demonstrating the collective effort required to defeat the Life Fiber threat. After the battle, with the Life Fibers destroyed, everyone can finally live a normal life free of the Life Fibers.
