Genève-Servette Hockey Club (also called Servette or GSHC) is a professional ice hockey team from Geneva, Switzerland. It plays in the National League (NL), the country’s top division, and is the oldest club in the league, having been founded in 1905. The team’s home arena is the Patinoire des Vernets, which seats 7,135 spectators.
The club began in 1905 as the ice hockey section of Servette FC. In 1954, the team played on artificial ice for the first time, at the Pavillon des Sports, after previously hosting matches in Lausanne or au Pont. The first game on the new ice was against Urania Genève Sport (UGS). Two years later, in 1956, the club earned its first promotion to the National League B. The Les Vernets rink opened in 1958. In 1959, Servette won the Swiss Cup by defeating Neuchâtel-Sports Young Sprinters HC 7–3 in front of 11,820 fans, a crowd record for Les Vernets. In 1963, the ice hockey sections of Servette and UGS merged to form Genève-Servette HC. The new club won the National League B championship in 1964, beating EHC Biel in the final, and moved up to the top-tier National League A. The team was relegated back to the NLB in 1975, and then to the third-division 1. Liga in 1980. It returned to the NLB in 1995 after a victory over Luzern, and reached the National League A again in 2001 by sweeping Chur 4–0 in the final.
In 2008, Genève-Servette reached the NL final for the first time after a 4–1 semifinal series win over HC Fribourg-Gottéron. In 2010, after finishing second in the regular season, the team came back from a 3–1 deficit to beat Fribourg-Gottéron in the quarterfinals, then defeated EV Zug in the semifinals. In the finals against SC Bern, they rallied from 3–1 down to force a seventh game, which they lost in Bern. During the 2010–11 season, the club was the third-most attended team in Switzerland, averaging 6,971 spectators per game. The team won the Spengler Cup in 2013 and again in 2014. In 2017, they lost to EHC Kloten in the Swiss Cup final. In 2023, Genève-Servette finished first in the regular season for the first time, tied on points with EHC Biel but ahead by a goal difference of just three goals (+45 vs. +42). They then defeated Biel in the playoff final to become Swiss champions, earning a spot in the 2023–24 Champions Hockey League.
