The club was established on 19 January 1998 as Eishockeyclub HC München 1998 and began play in the Bezirksliga, winning the district championship. It quickly moved up the ranks, winning league titles in the Bayernliga. In 2003 the club changed its name to Eishockeyclub München. After promotion from the Bavarian League to the Oberliga in 2003, the senior team was outsourced to the EHC München Spielbetriebs GmbH in 2004. The club gained promotion to the 2. Bundesliga, whose championship they won in 2010. By July 2010, EHC München had earned promotion into the DEL and reached the playoffs in its first season. After financial problems, the team got a new sponsor in 2012 and was renamed EHC Red Bull München. Since 1 May 2013, the company and team have been owned by Red Bull GmbH and renamed EHC Red Bull München GmbH. The team plays its home games at SAP Garden, an 11,500-capacity indoor arena built in Olympiapark, Munich, since 2024; prior to that they played at Olympia Eishalle.
