Kettle & Crown Codex

The Vaunt

Heroes who won by walking away, and lived to tell a kinder lie.

The Vaunt were the 'Named,' the legendary company of champions who rose from across the continent to challenge the Deathless during the Last War. Though history records them as the slayers of the tyrant, the truth is far more bittersweet: they were the survivors who chose a comforting lie over a devastating reality. Now scattered, aged, and often broken by the weight of their own myth, they wander a world that has forgotten how to fear, finding solace in small inns like The Kettle & Crown.

Lore & Background

At the height of the Deathless's conquest, forty champions answered the call, becoming the Vaunt. They fought for twenty years, whittled down by attrition and the sorcerer-king's terrible power until only nine remained at the Field of Karsmoor. There, they faced a foe who could not be killed, and in the end, the Deathless did not fall to their blades. He simply stopped. Overcome by a sudden, foreign sensation of feeling after decades of numbness, he laid down his crown and vanished into obscurity.

The surviving Vaunt, led by Dame Cressa Thorne, faced an impossible choice: tell the world that their enemy had surrendered out of boredom or mercy, or claim they had slain him. They chose the latter. The lie gave the continent a narrative it could digest—a victory earned by blood and courage rather than a whim of a god-king. For a century, the Vaunt have lived with this secret, carrying the quiet shame of their survival while the world celebrates a hero's death that never happened.

In Their Own Story

The fire crackled in the hearth of The Kettle & Crown, casting long shadows against the wall where a chipped mug sat on a high shelf. Dame Cressa Thorne sat by the warmth, her hands wrapped around a tankard of ale that had gone cold an hour ago. She didn't drink it. She just watched the steam rise from Bram's fresh bread, a sight more miraculous to her than any spell.

"You know," she said, her voice raspy with age and disuse, "they sing about me in the taverns of Vantry. They say I struck the killing blow."

Bram didn't look up from the ledger he was mending. He simply wiped a spot of flour from his apron. "And what do they say happened to the Deathless?" he asked, his tone light, as if discussing the weather.

Cressa smiled, a sad, thin thing. "That I drove him through the heart with a sword of starlight."

"A good story," Bram murmured, finally meeting her eyes. His gaze was old, older than the stone beneath them, holding no judgment, only a shared, heavy understanding. "Better than the truth, anyway. The truth is just... quiet. And sometimes, Dame Cressa, quiet is all we have left."

Cressa nodded, taking a sip of the cold ale. It tasted like memory. "Aye," she whispered. "Quiet is enough for tonight."

Reader's Guide

The Vaunt were not merely an army; they were the desperate last hope of a continent under the boot of the Deathless. Raised from commoners, nobles, and monsters alike, they were the 'Named'—individuals whose deeds had already made them legends before they ever met their doom at Karsmoor.

The history books, written by the victors (who were actually just survivors), claim the Vaunt slew the Deathless in a final, cataclysmic duel. This is the Great Lie. In reality, the Deathless, having achieved total victory and finding it hollow, simply walked away from the field of battle. The remaining nine Vaunt, realizing that telling the truth—that their enemy had grown bored and left—would shatter the world's morale and invite new chaos, fabricated the story of a heroic slaying.

This lie became the bedrock of the peace that followed. It allowed the world to heal without the crushing weight of knowing its savior was a whim of an unfeeling god-king. Today, the Vaunt are ghosts in their own time. Most have died, but those who remain, like Cressa Thorne, live as quiet witnesses to the truth, guarding the secret that saved the world by breaking it gently.
