The Deathless
The conqueror who won the world and chose to bake bread instead.
The Deathless is the title given to the sorcerer-king who conquered the continent of Veil a century ago, only to vanish in the moment of his total victory. While history books and bards claim he was slain by the heroic company known as the Vaunt at the Battle of Karsmoor, the truth is far quieter: he set down his crown, felt the cold wind of mortality for the first time in decades, and walked away to become a simple innkeeper named Bram. He is the hidden heart of *The Kettle & Crown*, a being of terrifying power who has chosen the humble path of baking bread and mending broken travelers over ruling a world he already broke.

Lore & Background
A century ago, the Deathless rose from the north, bringing a twenty-year war that ended at the field of Karsmoor. He stood alone over the ruins of his enemies, unkillable and unfeeling, having severed his own humanity to fuel his dominion. In that moment of absolute victory, he felt a sudden, piercing cold—a return of sensation that shattered his numbness. Realizing the hollowness of total control, he spared the last two surviving members of the Vaunt, let them tell their lie of his death, and walked into obscurity.
Now known as Bram, he keeps an inn in the forgotten valley of Hollowmere. He hides his true nature behind a grey beard, an apron, and a gentle demeanor that belies his history. The System recognizes him only as a low-level Innkeeper, grading his skills in hospitality rather than war. His power is strictly bound by the rules he sets within his own walls; outside of Hollowmere, he is just a strong old man who refuses to use the power that could unmake armies. He lives with the weight of the burning of his first village (Hollowmere) and the silence of the crown he left behind.
In Their Own Story
The fire crackled in the hearth, casting long, dancing shadows against the rafters where the silent muster-horn hung. A traveler, his armor still stained with the mud of a road that shouldn't exist anymore, slammed his sword onto the table. "I seek the Deathless," he growled, eyes wild with the hunger for glory. "They say he lives here in this valley."
Bram didn't look up from the loaf he was slicing, the crust singing softly as it cooled. He placed a steaming mug of spiced cider on the wood before the man. "We don't serve that kind of talk at the Kettle & Crown," Bram said, his voice warm as the hearth. "But we do have stew, and a dry bed if you're tired. The road is long, and the cold is deep."
The traveler blinked, the aggression faltering against the sheer, disarming normality of it all. He looked at the sword, then at the bread, then at the old man whose eyes held the depth of a century's silence. "Just stew?" the man asked, his voice cracking.
"And a roof," Bram smiled, wiping his hands on his apron. "And no questions asked that aren't offered. Sit down, friend. You look like you've carried enough for one day."
Reader's Guide
The world believes the Deathless died a century ago at the Battle of Karsmoor, slain by the heroic Vaunt. This is a lie told to save face and give the world peace. The truth is that the sorcerer-king won the war, stood alone over the broken continent, and found victory empty. He felt a cold wind—the first sensation in twenty years—and chose to step down.
He spared the last two Vaunt, allowing them to claim his death so they could live with their honor intact. He walked away from the crown, leaving it on the field, and vanished into the wilds. For generations, he has lived as Bram, an innkeeper in Hollowmere, a valley he once burned but now painstakingly rebuilds.
His power remains immense but is suppressed by his own choice and the System's grading of him as a mere [Innkeeper]. He cannot use his Sovereign abilities without risking exposure to gods and enemies who still hunt the legend. Instead, he uses hospitality, wit, and the binding magic of his inn's House Rules to solve problems. The Deathless is no longer a conqueror; he is the man who keeps the light on for those who have nowhere else to go.
Did You Know?
- His true name, Emrin, is known only to Maren, a survivor from before his reign as king.
- He burned the original village of Hollowmere during the war; he now lives there to atone by rebuilding it.
- The 'killing blow' legends are entirely false; he died to a feeling of cold wind, not a blade.
- His [Innkeeper] class is technically ranked [F], hiding a dormant Sovereign power that exceeds the System's scale.
