Life and work

Cassin studied political economics, constitutional history, and Roman law at the University of Provence, earning distinctions and a doctorate in juridical science, economics and politics in 1914.[3] During the First World War he led an attack at the Battle of the Meuse in 1916 and was gravely injured by machine gunfire.[4] He was awarded the Croix de Guerre but was mustered out as a war invalid.[4] Refusing the armistice, Cassin joined General Charles de Gaulle in London in June 1940 to help draft the statutes of Free France.[5]

Cassin started teaching law as a professor at Lille in 1920, then moved to a professorship in Paris in 1929, where his teaching career lasted until 1960.[6] From 1943 until 1976, Cassin held the presidency of the Alliance Israelite Universelle.[7][8]
