His writings laid the foundations for international law, and he is often called the "father of international law".[1] A Dutch humanist, diplomat, lawyer, theologian, jurist, statesman, poet and playwright, Hugo Grotius (also called Hugo de Groot) lived from 10 April 1583 to 28 August 1645.[2] Born in Delft, he was a child prodigy who pursued studies at Leiden University.[2][3]

Life and work

Grotius was the first child of Jan Cornets de Groot and Alida van Overschie, born in Delft during the Dutch Revolt.[4] Grotius entered Leiden University at age eleven and published his first book at age sixteen.[5] Between 1599 and 1607, Grotius ran a law practice in The Hague.[3] Grotius was imprisoned in Loevestein Castle for his involvement in religious policy controversies, but escaped hidden in a book chest.[2][3]

Grotius died on 28 August 1645 after being shipwrecked near Rostock, and his body was laid to rest in the Nieuwe Kerk in Delft.[6][3] From 1621 until 1644, Grotius resided in France for nearly the entire period.[7]

What the cited sources add

The DutchReview account states that Grotius drafted the ideology of religious tolerance during his work for Johan van Oldenbarnevelt.[3] The same source notes that in 1631, after much travelling, Grotius returned to the Netherlands and opened his law practice in Amsterdam.[3] The DutchReview account also mentions that Grotius started exploring the idea of a world beyond religion.[3] A Brill publication from 2009 is titled "Property, piracy and punishment".[8]
